Giving Is Beautiful

New Jersey artist Gwen R and musician Laura C are joining with Marti Hottenstien's How to Save a Life Foundation to fight addiction. The "Giving is Beautiful Fundraiser" is centered around specially designed addiction recovery prayer beads from http://TwelveBeads.com combined with a CD from songwriter LauraC at http://lauracmusic.com.

Sales can be made via the Internet and are open to anyone who would like to donate. When visitors to TwelveBeads.com purchase the gift set, $20.00 will be deposited into the foundation's account.

The Giving is Beautiful HOPE Necklace features 8mm and 6mm black obsidian beads with gun metal Miyuki hex cut glass and bead accents. Black obsidian is known for its protective qualities and is believed to absorb negative emotions such as anger, fear, and criticism. The necklace and CD are available at http://www.twelvebeads.com/Giving_Is_Beautiful.html

"All three of us are passionate about addiction recovery and are always looking for new ways to help others," Gwen R said.

Karl HottensteinAll donations go directly to the How to Save a Life Foundation http://howtosavealifefoundation.org and help those who can not afford treatment. Since its founding in June 2007, How to Save a Life has helped more than 400 people receive addiction treatment. The foundation dedicates its work to the memory of Karl Hottenstein who was denied treatment for drug addiction. He died six weeks later.

Gwen R and Laura C struggled with addiction and now put great energy into helping others in the daily effort to remain sober. "Addiction is not a moral failing but a disease that can only be cured through treatment," Hottenstien said.

Gwen R is a graduate of the Art Institute of Philadelphia and is founder of TwelveBeads.com. There she offers her own designs of prayer beads that soothe, heal, and bring hope. All promote recovery from addiction.

Laura C has been on CBS' The TODAY SHOW twice, various news stations around the country, She has performed at major events and continues to travel with her band. Laura C has been nominated for a coveted PRISM award.

The CD "The Gift of Brokenness" is about Laura C's journey. In a way, each song is a piece of her, as she took herself apart and put herself back together again. It is about dealing with anger, despair and fear. And ultimately, it is about joy, hope and healing.

"Our focus on healing, both through art and music, makes us a good match for helping How to Save a Life. Marti Hottenstien does wonderful work through her foundation," Gwen R said.

All of TwelveBeads recovery jewelry features 12 core beads used to say special devotions or affirmations. The central purpose of the beads is to help the wearer connect with his or her Higher Power.

Take12Radio.com

Take12Radio.com is a Christian owned and operated Recovery

Talk and Positive Music Internet Radio Station.

Monty Meyer. (the Monty'man) is the owner and Executive Producer of K.H.L.T. (K-HALT) Recovery Broadcasting, The Take 12 Recovery Radio Show and Sponsor to Sponsor Recovery Publications

A web site publication that has been serving the recovery community since 1997 Sponsor to Sponsor is where K.H.L.T. was birthed.

Working on the Pastoral Staff of Lebanon Foursquare Church and with local drug & alcohol services Monty's work is primarily with those who have a desire to become whole through the process of recovery.

"The Internet is a community all it's own, and like any community it's population is filled to the overflowing with hurting and desperate people searching for a way out of drug, alcohol and other addictions. I believe that the only way to experience total recovery from this type of bondage is through accountability, education and a relationship with a power greater than ourselves, GOD.

Though there are some who experience a wonderful freedom from active drug and alcohol use without turning their will and their life over to the care of the creator, many of them never completely recover.

If they do it is only through the mercy of the God they have yet to know.

It is in the context of the original program of Alcoholics Anonymous, and the direction of a loving God that Take12Radio.com & KHLT Recovery Broadcasting are effective."

The format that Monty uses in all of his Take 12 shows come from deep within his spirit. He desires that all seeking recovery never die behind any type of addiction or alcoholism. But more importantly, Monty's heart is for the spiritual condition of his fellow man. Though he respects the rights of all people to believe as they will; Monty makes no apologizes for being specific that his Higher Power is Jesus Christ*

OUR DESIRE

We at KHLT Recovery Broadcasting and Take12Radio.com know that we have more than a partial remedy for the addict and alcoholic. We have the solution in the 12 Steps that guide us to the complete and final answer. A loving God who expresses himself by His complete understanding of His creation, not our limited understanding of Him.

We hope all our shows will point the listener to the final and complete answer to our powerlessness. God.

The Sober Cafe Podcast

In 2006, the Sober Cafe Podcast set out to increase support for independent recording artists in recovery whose music is available online at SunlightOfTheSpirit.com.  By focusing on music from clean and sober musicians, our show is spreading awareness that great music can be created without the use of drugs or alcohol.

Drawing from the wealth of personal experience of artists in long-term recovery, we then began our “Three Cups of Coffee & the Truth” interviews, focusing on their creative process as well as their experience, strength, and hope in recovery from addiction in all its forms. (Inspiration for the title of our interview series comes from Nashville Songwriters’ Hall of Fame Member Harlan Howard, who often said, “Country music is three chords and the truth.”)

In 2008, SoberCafePodcast.com received an Entertainment Industries Council PRISM Award for Interactive Media.  These awards, presented by the Entertainment Industries Council, Inc. (EIC), in collaboration with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and FX Network, reflect the entertainment industry’s commitment to the accurate depiction of addiction and health issues in film, television, music, comic books and interactive entertainment.   We are truly honored and cherish this award.

Our focus in 2009 is to continue creating our intimate music shows and to increase production of our “Three Cups of Coffee & the Truth” interview series.  We’re expanding our interviews to also include authors, actors, and artists!

All of the music you hear in our podcasts is available through Sunlight of the Spirit Music - exclusively selling CDs from artists in recovery, with the largest selection of 12 step and recovery music available anywhere on the planet!  If you like what you hear and would like to support artists in recovery, please visit sunlightofthespirit.com.

Thanks for reading this far.  You rock!  Now, grab a half double decaffeinated half-caf, with a twist of lemon, put your feet up, and enjoy the show.

-Gracie Vandiver, Producer & Host
P.S.  If you would like to sponsor an episode, we would love to hear from you.  Contact info can be found on our Sponsors page.

Meet Laura C

Hi, my name is LauraC and I'm an alcoholic/addict. Yes, you can laugh, I am raising my hand and sitting in a circle as we speak. I can laugh now too. I write and record a new genre of music called RECOVERY MUSIC. The CD will be entitled "The Gift of Brokenness", and will have 12 Songs - each relating to one of the 12 Steps in Recovery. It's basically, my raw, painful, joyful & hopeful process of recovering from addiction - in musical form. I wrote about everything....from driving drunk in a blackout, ("Pray for Me"), to sitting in an AA meeting and hating everybody and craving a drink, to waking up for the first time sober that I felt a glimmer of hope. I was blessed to record with Producers, Randy Miller (4 time Grammy Winner), and Sandy Stewart (Stevie Nicks/Fleetwood Mac). We tracked the CD in Houston, TX and are mastering in L.A. this Jan 30. I am expecting a release date on CD maby late February. You can see a clip of me on NBC's The TODAY SHOW w/Meredith Viera on my official website: http://www.lauracmusic.com/, just click on PRESS. I hope you like the tunes. Let's keep in touch. God is Good.

Sober Musicians

From our mission statement...

...Our aim is to help one another. Although you will see here and there references and links to many recovery programs, it is our wish that this website,
Sober Musicians
remain non denominational. Meaning we don't get into stupid arguments about which way is better to get and stay sober.

There are plenty other forums and message boards on the Web to join and argue the merits of our recovery programs, if we have one. With that said, let this be our Mission Statement, for lack of a simpler term.

...My friend Gooch calls it our Tablature. A place for sober artists of every stripe, or those sobering up. A Sober Studio if you will, that our music and art may thrive beyond our addiction.

One more crucial thing, folks... You gotta be wanting to have fun if you visit the forums!

For years, we played music in bars, or Pete's garage on Friday Nights, or on the corner of Portage and Main, watching the dimes and quarters drop in the case... Some of us played until our fingers lost their touch... Some of us played until the notes inside our minds exhausted themselves into staccato silences...

Most of us played loaded with alcohol and drugs, believing they were the fuel to express our passion, a way to transcribe that which we felt was our link to the cosmic, the divine, the undefinable... In these pages, in no particular order or organized fashion, are our stories, our hopes and fears, our joys and sorrows, past and present.

We're Treating Life Well now...

About Gracie Vandiver

Gracie Vandiver is the founder of SunlightOfTheSpirit.com.

She is the producer and host of the popular Sober Cafe Podcast, interviewing artists in recovery about their journey along with sharing their music. The Sober Café Podcast received a 2008 PRISM Award for interactive media presented by the Entertainment Industries Council, Inc. in partnership with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

As a songwriter, she gathered up some of her award-winning songwriting friends last year and produced, Trail of Light – Fifteen Songs Exploring the Journey From Alcoholism and Addiction to a New Life In Recovery.

Trail of Light was also honored with a 2008 PRISM Award for best exemplifying accurate depiction of drug, alcohol and tobacco use and addiction in a music recording. The compilation CD is being used by the Betty Ford Center, as well as other treatment centers for breaking through invisible barriers and paving the way for talking about things that most people only think about.

Gracie is also a proud recipient of a 2008 Posi Award, presented to her by Empower Music and Arts. She received the positive/new thought music award in the personal transformation category for her song, When I Get Outta Bed.

Gracie performs “music for your spiritual toolkit” at conferences and concerts around the country. She continues to pass along the gifts she has received during her sixteen-years of recovery by sharing some of the spiritual truths she has learned and by performing songs about her journey.

This past summer, Gracie had the joy of co-producing a spoken word and music CD with David Rivers and philosopher Noah benShea. Getting Better - Don't Let The Past Kidnap Your Future includes four songs by Gracie and co-writers Sonia Lee, Kathy Ashworth, and David Rivers. The other four tracks are beautifully written and narrated by Noah, with instrumental versions of their music supporting his insightful messages.

She is also co-author of the music business book, Your First Cut, a Step-by-Step Guide to Getting There, co-written with her husband, hit songwriter Jerry Vandiver.

Gracie lives in Nashville with her husband Jerry, their two dogs, two cats, and her fabulous stash of yarn.
