Experience Strength and Hope

A smart man learns from his mistakes, but a wise man learns from other people's mistakes! Ronald Edwards spent his life falling short of being a wise man, and had to accept that just being this side of smart is not all that bad. To say that it's a bit difficult to grow up with a father who was still learning how to be "smart" is an understatement. Life is a journey, not a destination and along the way this poet, tried to record my life's lessons of my journey. Over his 30 years in the engineering aerospace industry, Ron has had many successes and failures in his professional career and personal life. His education, religious beliefs, upbringing, friends and family could not have prepared him for the road of his disease, and acceptance of who, and what he is. His life path has taken him to bottoms and lows most do not recover from, and in his poetry he has found that there is a softer and easier way to live, and that there is help. Ron has in his most humble, honest efforts tried to express his personal "experience, strength and hope" with these poems of his life's lessons.

12 Step Me

Our group's birthday is September 4, 2010.
Our group is like most AA groups: We hold business meetings, and obtain group conscience for any issues, and use the Concepts of Service to the extent we are able. Issues that may affect the site owner's personal liability or the liability of any group member are understandably not handled at the group level.
Any member of Alcoholics Anonymous may join our group. To have voting rights, you must be a regularly attending member for at least 30 days.
Any member who would like to chair or perform other service work may contact admin@12stepme.org.

She Recovers - Yoga and Recovery on the Beach

She Recovers warmly invites the women of “Sober Sites” to join us for A Sacred Pause:

Yoga and Recovery on the Beach this November 24 – December 1st.

This retreat promises seven days of female energy, yoga, sun, sand and sea right on the beach in Tulum, one hour south of Cancun. We will honor ourselves, our recovery and our bodies by taking a full week to relax and connect with ourselves, reflect on what we want to create next in our lives, and then refocus our energy for the return home. Although various excursion options will be made available, nutritious meals and yoga classes will be the only specifically scheduled daily activities to allow each participant to spend time exactly as she wishes. The Mayans predict that the end of this year marks a period of renewal for all of us, so we are thrilled to be hosting women in recovery in this sacred place, the Mayan Riviera.

June/July = Guinevere Gets Sober

An award-winning, top-ranking addiction blog offering news, reviews, and straight talk about addiction and recovery

August = No Permanent Solutions

I'm 32, married, have a huge family, work behind a desk 9am–5pm and coach diving on the side. My favorite things in this world are my family, diving, dancing, corny movies, awe-ha moments (aka Godshots), silly hair, playful banter, and belly laughs. Any of these things shared with other people makes them even better! I'm in recovery from a myriad of dependencies, and I primarily relate as a recovering alcoholic, bulimic and cutter. I lived with major depression for half my life and have received 21 ECTs. Today I live free from the hell I believed I could only escape through suicide. I don’t know why I was graced with recovery after over a decade of pain and struggle, but I know I cannot afford to keep it to myself nor do I want to. I love sharing my story and my life today, and I hope that my experience might lend support and hope to others. Remember every experience we have will pass. Be present for the good as well as the seemingly bad, because both have value and both are only temporary.

Everyday Addiction: Healing the Habits of Life

In this afternoon workshop we will look at the issues that trouble us in our daily lives, both internal and external. We will explore self-judgment and painful emotional habits; we will work with letting go of the habitual behaviors that undermine our happiness and serenity. Using themes like honesty, intention, and acceptance, we will come to understand the roots of our distress and develop tools to overcome and heal these persistent problems.

The day's teaching will include mindfulness meditation techniques and Buddhist/12-Step parallels.

Kevin Griffin is the author of the seminal 2004 book One Breath at a Time: Buddhism and the Twelve Steps and the recent A Burning Desire: Dharma God and the Path of Recovery. He has been practicing Buddhist meditation for three decades and been in recovery since 1985. He’s been a meditation teacher for over fifteen years. His teacher training was at Spirit Rock Meditation Center where he currently leads Dharma and Recovery classes.
